Artist Statement
This self-portrait explores my non-traditional path through life in abstract form. For many years I believed I was doing life “wrong”, but from where I stand now, in my early 40s, I can see clearly that I was simply following my own values and vision. I was being true to myself.
My design inspiration was Piet Mondrian’s Composition A, chosen for its strict geometry, which I reimagined to reflect life’s complexities. My color palette was drawn from Henri Matisse’s The Woman with the Hat purely because it pleases me.
The details are intentional- a background of affirmations about the past, present, and future representing the values quietly guiding my decisions. Over this, three large rectangles anchor the composition symbolizing bigger goals, dreams, and purpose. Building outward with smaller shapes, each one determines the color and placement of the next- similar to steps in life. The linked shapes represent connection. Empty spaces symbolize loss and parts of myself I’ve chosen to leave behind. Other spaces are filled with emerging color representing growth and transformation. Irregular edges are a reminder to embrace imperfection. Together, these elements form a path through the composition, a harmonious whole that mirrors how we evolve through experience, and how each step quietly prepares us for the next. The palette is playful by design expressing a celebration of the life we build for ourselves.
